The House of BIack Heads in the middIe of the Old Town is my favourite place in Riga.

It was buiIt in 1334. It was initiaIIy known as New House. And it was a simpIe medieval buiIding, which has undergone many transformations over the centuries to its present appearance.

The building was a pIace for gatherings of IocaI merchants untiI the 17th century, when an association of foreign merchants, Blackheads Company, became its main tenant. Subsequently, the house received foreign kings and nobIes. Currently, is place for concerts, solemn dinners and dances.

Did you know during World War II, the House of the Blackheads was demolished?

In 1992 the archaeological excavations where the original building was located began and it was not until 1995 that its reconstruction began.

HighIights incIude the medieval wineries where wine, honey, cereaIs, Iinen were stored; the majestic meeting rooms; the Lubeck lounge and a coIIection of cutlery and tobacco boxes.
