Plitvice National Park is my favourite place in Croatia. Its nature offers us 16 small lakes connected to each other by waterfalls. They were formed thanks to the dissolution of the limestone rock. It is surrounded by caves, fir and beech forests where bears, wolves and rare bird species live. The lakes cover a little less than 1% of the Park.

Did you know it is Croatia’s oldest and largest National Park, added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 1979?

I like it for its great natural beauty. It is beautiful in any season: in spring, the meadows are filled with flowers; in summer, the green becomes very intense; in autumn, the forests are stained with many colors and in winter, the park is covered with snow and the waterfalls are frozen.

The Park offers four hiking trails and eight circular trails to enjoy the lake system, which is divided into twelve upper lakes and four lower lakes. They all end at the River Korana through the Sastavci waterfall. In winter it is possible to ski; the ski resort is located in the village of Mukinje.

Plitvice has a panoramic train and silent electric boats.

It is important to wear appropriate clothing and footwear, sun protection, hat and sunglasses in summer, and a raincoat in case of rain. The trails are not fully adapted for people with disabilities. There is no need to leave the marked trails and it is convenient to check on the website of the Park the estimated time in completing a route in order to have enough time.

The Park is open all year round, although the timetable varies depending on the season.
