Danish cuisine has its influence from French and Italian cuisine. Similar to Norwegian and Swedish cuisine, it is of high quality and uses local and seasonal products.

Its reference is the restaurant Noma, by chef René Redzepi, in the city of Copenhagen, which has won four times (2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014) the title of Best Restaurant in the World.

Copenhagen has a wide variety of restaurants, for all budgets. The city’s official Tourism website offers a very complete guide classifying them (organic, economical restaurants, Michelin starred restaurants, traditional Danish cuisine….).

Some of the typical dishes of Danish cuisine are:

  • Citronfromatge: Christmas candy based on cream, eggs, jelly and lemon.
  • Flæskesteg: roast pork accompanied with red pepper and potato, typical of Christmas Eve.
  • Frikadeller: minced meat, egg and onion balls usually accompanied by beets and cooked potatoes.
  • Gravad laks: salmon marinated with dill, served with sweet mustard.
  • Hakkeboffer: typical Danish burger.
  • Hvid labskovs: beef stew with potatoes, pepper and bay leaf.
  • Jule risengrod: rice pudding bathed in cherry liqueur (kirsch).
  • Kraasesuppe melboller: soup with flour and butter fritters.
  • Mycella: Danish cheese similar to gorgonzola.
  • Sild: herring, which can be taken smoked, stewed, marinated, or with curry.
  • Smørrebrød: slice of rye bread spread with butter and accompanied by sausage, smoked herring or cheese. It is a traditional dish, for an economical and light meal.
  • Svineorbrad: pork chops stuffed with plums and apples.
  • Wienerbrød: puff pastry stuffed with almonds and cinnamon.

Do not forget to accompany the meal with a Danish beer. The most famous ones are Tuborg and Carlsberg.
